Affordable and slightly old fashioned in the best possible way, let crepe paper streamers, paper chains and starry garlands be the final flourish to your Christmas decoration scheme. Here are our favourite ways to use them.

 PAPER CHAINS
So affordable and pretty, with a process of assembly easy enough to get even the youngest crafters in the family involved, yet they still look suprisingly sophisticated.

PAPER GARLANDS & CRAFT PUNCHED SHAPES
Invest in a craft punch - basially a giant hole punch that when applied to coloured card yeilds various pretty shapes - you won't regret it. String your craft punched bounty in to pretty gardlands, or stick straight to walls.

CREPE PAPER STREAMERS
Crepe-paper streamers are an affordable and effective way to add festive cheer to walls and furniture.

Paper streamers - very simply made by rolling a sheet of crepe paper and cutting into slices like a swiss roll - can be garlanded around for a village-hall-celebration look.

Paper Fans and Flowers
For those who embrace colourful, kitsch decorating. Decorations derived from traditional Mexican and Polish styles are prefect for maximalists. See how to make your paper flowers.

Go oversize on decorations for impact. One of these paper rosettes would hold its own in a small room.

House&Garden.
Your backyard doesn't expire by summer's end. Use these decorating ideas to transition your porch, patio or backyard for autumn.

Outdoor Daybed
Snuggling up on an outdoor swing looks like an all-weather activity when it's positioned in a snug alcove. Improvised this divan using rope, metal rings and wood.

Hanging Lanterns
That's no small stove. A house heats the entire loggia with a massive limestone fireplace. Curling up on one of the sectional sofas sounds extra relaxing under the glow of overhead lanterns.

Hooded Chair
The cushioned sofa and chaise lounge look comfy, but the star of this open-air living room is the antique Porter's chair. The canopied nook provides the perfect outdoor reading spot, and the best seat at the dining table.

Cozy Fireplace
Extend the season of alfresco dining with a freestanding chimney. Plus, summer's end means no pesky bugs.

Curtained Cabana
Pull back the thick drapes during the day or turn on the paper lanterns at night. Either way, this California pagoda looks perfectly dreamy.
What shades say fresh air, flowers in bloom, cool breezes and carefree afternoons?

Sea green walls in Porter Paints Parsley Tint polish off a serene Florida bedroom by Jennifer Garrigues.

In this octagonal anteroom between master bedroom and bath, Gary McBournie used Benjamin Moore's Florida Pink on the walls and added a dollop of Benjamin Moore's White Dove on the trim.

A colorful bathroom's striped palazzo curtains offer a graphic counterpoint to the citrusy paint on the walls and ceiling.

Designer Robert Passal mixed colors to concoct his own soothing blue for the master bedroom in his Miami Beach apartment.

For a Palm Beach sunroom, designer Allison Paladino had the walls glazed bright green to capture the light and painted the woodwork white to tone it down. "The sunroom is gutsy, but the room is actually quite relaxing because I restricted the palette," she says.

The dining room in a blue-loving apartment starts with a wall of cerulean cabinets and ends with a shimmery silver ceiling.

In The Woodlands, where the average home sells for nearly half a million, new luxury-living options and mixed-use setups are changing the landscape. The population of the master-planned community has grown by 40 percent in the last decade, and now there's a construction boom to show for it.

Pockets of newly built mansions, like the sixbedroom modern French villa in the East Shore subdivision, on the market now for $5.5 million, are sprouting up a stone's throw from mixed-use developments with desirable amenities. There's the new Hughes Landing complex, boasting resort-inspired apartments and a huge Whole Foods. Across the lake, Ziegler Cooper's Research Forest Lakeside is a 10-building development with sleek offices and casual-cool-restaurants. And the Howard Hughes Corp.'s 23-story Treviso luxury condo tower, preselling now, will soon rise in the central Waterway district, near the Woodlands Pavilion.

Treviso, named after a medieval Italian town north of Venice, is the second condominium project in The Woodlands. Since The Howard Hughes Corp. finished the Waterway Lofts, a 56-unit condominium midrise, in 2006, the developer has fielded many calls from people interested in more condominiums in The Woodlands, Doyle said.

Many of the prospective condo buyers are empty nesters who are looking to downsize from a larger home in The Woodlands but want to stay near friends and family in the master-planned community, Doyle said. Some of the buyers are single working professionals who want a short commute to work inside The Woodlands and hassle-free living near The Woodlands Town Center, Waterway Square Plaza and The Woodlands Waterway, he added. “There’s now an interest and acceptance of high-rise living,” Doyle said. “That’s the trend. People want urban mixed-use, walkable centers that are close to all the activity.”

Treviso will feature one- to three-bedroom condominium units with a study and two-and-a-half bathrooms, averaging 1,750 square feet. The units, which start at $650,000, will feature quartz countertops, German Miele appliances and wine chiller, lacquer-finished cabinets, hardwood floors and 10- to 12-foot ceilings with expansive glass windows overlooking The Woodlands.

The top two stories will feature penthouses, which have seen the most demand so far, Doyle said. Customers will have the option to customize the floor plans and upgrade the materials, finishes and appliances inside the penthouse units, he added.

Treviso’s common-area amenities include a resident clubroom with a lounge and demonstration kitchen, private dining area, a fitness center, a resort-style pool with cabanas and a sun shelf and an outdoor grill and fire pit. The Howard Hughes Corp. also is considering 24-hour concierge service and security, Doyle said. There will be space on the ground floor for two restaurants, he added.

The glass, brick and stone-base tower, designed by Atlanta-based The Preston Partnership LLC, will feature contemporary and clean design, evocative of Europe, Doyle said. The Texas division of Alabama-based Hoar Construction will be the general contractor, and Houston-based Sudhoff Cos. is marketing and selling the units.

The Howard Hughes Corp. plans to begin construction before the end of this year— hopefully in October after about half of the units are sold, Doyle said. The developer is targeting an opening date sometime in the first quarter of 2017, he added.

Meanwhile, the health care industry has set out to give energy a run for its money. Just as Exxon Mobil opens its 385-acre campus, hospitals including Memorial Hermann, Texas Children's and St. Luke's have invested a total of $850 million in new or renovated facilities in The Woodlands.

Statistically Speaking:
  • 34,770 Estimated maximum number of homes that can be built in The Woodlands; there are currently about 33,000.
  • 7,235 Total acreage of green spaces, including golf courses and forest preserves.
  • 14,100 Number of jobs The Woodlands Development Co. Projects the suburb will add in the next five years.
